All international students must acquaint themselves with the current visa regulations governing their country before travelling to Germany. Both guest students as well as degree-seeking international students are required to secure visas. However, citizens of EU nations do not require a visa to enter Germany. Some students (citizens of the United States, for example) may enter Germany on a tourist visa and apply for student visas after arrival. Students from other nations must possess a student visa prior to departure. Although the ZU IO is happy to provide advice and answer questions, it is up to the students to secure the necessary paperwork for entering and studying in Germany.
Please contact the nearest German consulate or embassy to learn more about your stay in Germany.
Once in Germany, all international students will register at the local office for foreigner registration. Students should bring passports, numerous copies of their passports, at least two biometric photographs, and a financial statement on the letterhead of the bank bearing the signatures of bank officials as well as those of the applicant’s legal guardians. Applicants must show that they have access to at least €5,000.
Insurance
All foreign students must arrive in Germany with a valid health insurance policy. Students who plan to study for one semester may maintain their overseas health insurance during their semester-long stay. International degree-seeking students are required to acquire a German health care policy upon arrival.
